Square Enix Manga & Books Update

Hello everyone, this is Masaaki Shimizu, Publisher of Square Enix Manga & Books.

First of all, please allow me to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has been involved in launching our English-language publishing program. To our authors, licensors, staff, booksellers, and all our fans and readers: thank you very much! We’re tremendously grateful for all your efforts and support thus far. Now and in the future, our focus remains on contributing to the wellbeing of our staff while bringing our readers books of the highest quality.

Over the recent weeks we’ve had many discussions with our partners and licensors as we’ve continued to assess the ongoing impact of coronavirus on all our areas of operations, from production to shipping to retail sales. After careful consideration, we have decided to reschedule the on-sale dates of some selected series in response to these unprecedented conditions.

You can find the revised release dates for the below series debuts on our website (www.square-enix-books.com) under the “Release Calendar” section.

  • The Apothecary Diaries, vol. 1: December 8, 2020
  • Beauty and the Feast, vol. 1: February 23, 2021
  • The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated!, vol. 1: April 13, 2021
  • Ragna Crimson, vol. 1: February 9, 2021

The on-sale dates for rest of our series debuts will remain unaffected, and we’ll continue to work hard to get our books into the hands of readers in as timely a manner as possible.

Thanks again for your ongoing support and understanding.

Please stay safe and well!

4.10.2020

First and foremost, our hearts and thoughts go out to all of you who have been affected in any way by this unprecedented crisis.

Due to the effects of governmental shelter-in-place, business closures, and workforce reductions during the COVID-19 pandemic, we are experiencing significant disruptions all across the book and comics industries. These disruptions have affected the entire supply chain, from printer shutdowns to decreased shipping capacities to the unfortunate closure of so many bookstores, comic shops, and other retailers.

These current logistical barriers have resulted in us taking the difficult decision to postpone the scheduled releases of our May and June titles to later months, in the hopes of getting our books to you as soon as circumstances allow. We greatly appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through these challenging times together.

The revised release dates are currently projected as follow:

(Titles are in alphabetical order)

  • FINAL FANTASY XIV: Shadowbringers The Art of Reflection -Histories Forsaken- : July 28, 2020 (Print edition only)
  • FINAL FANTASY XV: The Dawn of the Future : July 14, 2020 (The digital edition will be available on the original release date of June 23, 2020.)
  • Hi Score Girl 3: July 28, 2020 (The digital edition will be available on the original release date of June 23, 2020.)
  • Soul Eater: The Perfect Edition 1: July 28, 2020 (Print edition only)
  • Suppose a Kid from the Last Dungeon Boonies Moved to a Starter Town 2: Aug 25, 2020 (The digital edition will be available on the original release date of June 23, 2020.)
  • Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina 1: July 14, 2020 (The digital edition will be available on the original release date of May 12, 2020.)

As conditions are still evolving rapidly, we will continue to evaluate the situation on a day-to-day basis. We may need to make further changes to our manga and book release schedule depending on what the future brings over the coming weeks and months. Our priority is to minimize any risks and contribute to the wellbeing of our staff, partners, and, most of all, our fans and readers.

“We are excited to have this opportunity to introduce our wide variety of books with the help of PRHPS to our new readers,” said Katsuyoshi Matsuura, Executive Officer and Vice President of Publication Business Unit, Square Enix Co., Ltd. Masaaki Shimizu, General Manager and Publisher of Book Publishing Division, SEA who is responsible of the new program, said, “We’re so excited that we now have the full support from PRHPS for achieving our goals to introduce more English translated books and expand our reach to new audiences.”
